La colombofilia

La colombofilia es el arte de criar, cuidar y adiestrar a las palomas mensajeras.
Antiguamente se utilizaba con fines militares, se llevaban a las guerras y se soltaban en las trincheras para que volvieran a la base con información esencial de la situación (¡más balas, más balas! ¡nos estamos quedando sin municiones!).
Actualmente es un deporte en el que cada uno tiene sus propias palomas y palomar, se las lleva a todas a un punto determinado y la primera que llega, o la más rápida, es la que gana.
En una pata, cada paloma tiene una anilla, que se le coloca a los 7 días de nacer y la lleva toda la vida; es como su carnet de identidad con su numeración.
En la otra pata, lleva una anilla electrónica como un código de barras, que avisa al resto cuando llega a su palomar. En cada palomar hay un reloj que controla la hora de llegada.
Las palomas son animales muy fieles, macho y hembra siempre mantienen su pareja salvo que les juntes con otra.
Ponen dos huevos blancos en cada puesta y los pichones salen a los 21 días de incubación. La hembra incuba todo el día, menos 3 o 4 horas por la tarde que incuba el macho. Los pichones los alimentan los dos hasta que tienen 30 días que ya están emplumados y saltan del nido para independizarse. Suelen criar de cuatro a seis veces al año.
Los pichones son muy cobardes, muy gregarios y les gusta ir en grupo. Para entrenarlos, se les va llevando de pocos kilómetros en pocos kilómetros hasta hacer recorridos de hasta 1000 kilómetros.
Son muy fiables hasta 300 o 400 kilómetros, a partir de esa distancia muchos se pierden.
Los que logran regresar tienen que luchar contra las inclemencias del tiempo, las antenas, los cables o los cazadores.

Pigeon is the art of managing and caring for pigeons.

Each pigeon has a ring around one leg, it is like its identity card with their numbering. In the other leg they have an electronic ring with a bar code, this device alerts the others when it arrives at the dovecote. In each competing dovecote there is a clock that controls the arrival time.

Pigeons are very loyal animals, the male and female couple remain together forever unless the owner matches them with another one. They lay two white eggs in each set and they hatch after 21 days of incubation. The female incubates all day except for three or four hours in the afternoon when the male takes over. The baby pigeons are fed by the two parents until they are 30 days old, when they have already feathered. Then, they jump from the nest and become independent. The pigeons breed four to six times per year. The small pigeons are not very brave, they are gregarious and like to go in groups.

The training happens gradually, they will be taken a few kilometres further each time, until they can do up to a thousand kilometres. They are very reliable up to 300 or 400 kilometres but from that distance on, many get lost. Those who survive and manage to return to their dovecote, have had to fight the weather, the antennas, the cables and the hunters.
